District 4

District Director's Report

Very sad news. Joan Gerard passed away today. Joan was on the Board of Directors for 25 years representing District 3 (Hudson Valley, Suburban NYC, Northern NJ). She also was tournament chair of all four of their regionals and she was a long time board member of both the World Bridge Federation and the United States Bridge Federation. We lost a tireless worker for the game of bridge and I personally lost a good friend and my mentor.

In St. Louis the Board did a few things that might be of interest. They raised the Senior age to 60 and grandfathered those who are 55 by this year’s end. It was a token gesture, given that 95% of our membership still qualify.

A couple of alerts were changed. The one that will be of most interest is that NO 2D response to a strong 2C bid is alertable as of 1/1/14.

A new event was introduced in St Louis; the 0-10,000 Swiss Team (all four members must have less than 10,000 masterpoints). It was a rousing success as 81 teams entered. The Board is considering four more 0-10,000 events. A mini-Vanderbilt, Mixed Pairs, Fast Pairs and Open Pairs.

Congratulations to Joann Glasson on winning the Women’s Swiss Teams. I think it was her 6th National Championship!
